CITY OF FLINT UTILITIES DEPARTMENT
WATER POLLUTION CONTROL DIVISION
For Immediate Release
SUBJECT: WASTEWATER PLANT DISCHARGE
On 1/13/22, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the City of Flint Water Pollution Control Facility lost its chlorine disinfection for the final effluent discharged to the Flint river. The chlorination system had to be shut down due to a broken non-potable process water line used in the disinfection system. The water discharged received full wastewater treatment with the exception of the chlorination.
As a precautionary measure required by law, the State of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy and the Genesee County Health Department have been notified, as well as officials of Flint Township and Flushing.
The Genesee County Health Department recommends against body contact with the Flint River under the current conditions, particularly downstream of the release, west of the Mill Road Bridge at Flushing Road. High bacteria levels in the river should be expected. Notification of the water sample test results will be made by postings on the State of Michigan website.
