Water bill assistance up to $500 available for eligible Flint renters behind on water bills

FLINT, Mich. – Mayor Sheldon Neeley is pleased to announce a new opportunity to help Flint residents get caught up on their water and sewer bill. As part of the new assistance program, residents who rent their homes, and have a yearly income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level, may qualify for up to $500 towards their past due water and sewer bill balance.

Mayor Neeley proposed, and the Flint City Council has approved, $100,000 for the program. The funds will allow about 200 residents to participate on a first-come, first-served basis. While other water assistance programs are available for homeowners, this program seeks to fill a gap in resources specifically for renters.

“I understand that water payments can be a burden for many residents,” said Mayor Neeley. “My administration and I are continuously working to find ways to help ease that burden. This new program will provide renters with some relief, and I urge them to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Applications for the new assistance program will be accepted in person at the Water Customer Service Center at the following times and locations:

Monday:       9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Flint City Hall

Wednesday:  9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at City of Flint Service Center, 4813 Clio Rd.

Residents must bring the following documentation with them to apply for the program:

·       Valid State ID for all adult household members

·       Social Security Numbers for all household members

·       Past 30 days of household income, including check stubs, SS benefits, SSI, retirement, etc.

·       Most recent income tax filing (2018-2023)

·       Past due water bill (must be in tenant’s name)

·       Copy of federal income tax return

·       Current DHHS Benefit Summary/Notice of Case Action, if applicable

This assistance program is offered on a first come, first served basis. Applications will be accepted until all the available funds have been spent.
