Mayor Sheldon Neeley has ordered flags at Flint City Hall to be lowered to half-staff beginning Friday, September 6 to honor Flint Police Officer Byron Norris, who passed away unexpectedly on September 4.
“We offer our deepest condolences to Officer Norris’ family, friends, and fellow officers, and we will continue to lift them in prayer,” Mayor Neeley said. “Flags will be lowered to half-staff at Flint City Hall in honor of Officer Norris’s life and legacy of service to our community.”
Officer Norris served in the United States Army before joining the City of Flint Police Department, where he continued his dedication to serving the public. Hired in September 2022, Officer Norris was assigned to the Patrol Operations Bureau and was a valued member of the Tactical Response Team.
His outstanding commitment to his duties was recognized when he received the Officer of the Month award in February 2024 and an award from the 100 Club for his exceptional service to the community.
“It is never easy to deliver news of the loss of an officer under my command,” Flint Police Chief Terence Green said. “Officer Norris’s service and dedication to this agency will be remembered always, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of working alongside him. During this challenging time, please keep Officer Norris’s family in your thoughts as they navigate through this tragic loss.”
Flint residents, government agencies, and organizations are encouraged to display flags at half-staff. To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
