City of Flint Takes Bold Action to Demolish Longtime Blighted Church, Aggressively Pursuing Privately Owned Properties

FLINT, Mich. — The City of Flint has announced the demolition of a long-blighted church that has been a source of concern for neighbors and passersby. The demolition of Oak Park UMC Church, located at 2125 Saginaw Street, is a key part of the City’s Safe & Clean Summer Initiative, a multi-departmental effort to improve safety, cleanliness, and quality of life for Flint residents.

The historic structure, located at a prominent gateway into the city, has long stood as an eyesore and symbol of disinvestment. Its removal is being funded through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars and serves as a visible step forward in the city’s broader revitalization and neighborhood stabilization strategy.

With this action, the City of Flint is establishing a new standard: aggressively pursuing the demolition of privately owned properties that are unsafe, blighted, and detrimental to the health and safety of neighborhoods. By holding property owners accountable and removing dangerous structures, the city is reinforcing its commitment to residents and their right to live in safe, clean communities.
